The Junior Dash
The Swimland Great Australia Day Swim includes the Swimland Junior Dash for eight to twelve year old Junior swimmers. (Ages are as on Australia Day, 2017).
Seven year swimmers may also enter the eight year old event at their parents discretion
The event is in semi-sheltered water alongside the Brighton Pier, behind the main breakwater and is conducted in small groups of swimmers. The courses are from the low landings on the pier to the finish gate on the beach. See the course map below.
The courses are 200 metres for eight and nine YO’s, from the first landing on the pier, and 300 metres for the older swimmers, from the second landing.
The Junior Dash is sponsored by Paul Sadler Swimland, and is conducted by The Rotary Club of Brighton in association with the Brighton Lifesaving Club. It is supported by Swim Australia and it’s affiliated swim schools and swim clubs.
The pier and the walkways provide an outstanding spectator viewing area. Live entertainment and food stalls will be provided on the lawns adjoining the pier and baths.
“In our swim schools our kids learn and practice their skills in a very protected environment. We love the concept of the Swimland Junior Dash as it gives our eight to twelve year olds an opportunity to swim in a more challenging open water situation, with an appropriate level of safety and surveillance from the Brighton Life Saving Club. This is a great way for our kids to experience an open water swim and gain a skill for life”.

The event will be supervised by the Brighton Lifesaving Club. Parents can follow the event from the pier alongside. The event may be modified or canceled by the GADS Swim Safety Committee if it is considered that water conditions are unsuitable on the day.
For safety reasons, swimmers should confirm with their swim school or club coach that they are capable of completing the course. Swimmers should be capable of swimming 1km in a swimming pool environment. Entrants will also require the consent of their parent or guardian.

After completing registration, swimmers should assemble at the 200m or 300m start points on the pier. Marshals will direct swimmers to enter the water from the landings on the pier in their age groups, according to their swim cap colour
Swimmers will be electronically timed. Trophies will be awarded for first, second and third places for each entry category and swimmers can download an on-line certificate recording their swim time.
All swimmers who complete the event will receive a medallion
Some age groups will be divided into two waves, for safety reasons. Results are based on the combined times. Results will be announced at the prize presentation at the end of the event and all results and swim times will be available on the event website
