Swim Instructions
Entry
Enter and pay online before 5 pm on 22 January. Print out the official receipt and present it at the registration tent at least 30 minutes prior to the event. Entries may be accepted on the day (cash only), subject to the number of prior entries
Registration
Present your receipt at the registration tent on the lawn outside the baths, where you will be issued with:
- A gear bag containing a colour-coded swim cap, which must be worn during the swim. It will contain an event T-shirt and peaked sports cap for the first 1,000 entrants in the 1400m and 5km swims
- A timing band, which must be worn on the ankle during the swim and returned to race officials after passing the Finish Gate and recording point. If you fail to present the timing band you will be charged $50
- A race numbers, marked on your arm or hand, which must be clearly visible
- All swimmers will be automatically entered in the raffle for $4,900 of travel and accommodation and secondary prizes. The ticket number is the same as the swimmer’s race number. A separate ticket will not be issued
- The gear bags contain random entry prizes and vouchers
Changing and Gear Storage
Men’s and women’s change facilities will be provided in the car park building of the Royal Brighton Yacht Club, adjacent to the lawns outside the baths
Place clothing and personal items in your gear bag and affix your swim registration number. You can store this in the supervised change area. Valuable items such as watches and wallets should not be left in gear bags. Bags can be collected on verification of the owner’s registration number. The event organizers will not be responsible for any loss or theft of bags or personal items
Wetsuit hire
XOSize will have wetsuits for hire at the event. Contact them at their tent or to reserve a wetsuit, email them at xosize.com.au.
The Start
The start is from the Middle Brighton Pier, next to the baths and registration area. Race officials will marshal each swim division at the start and signal the start
The start will be a deep water start. Swim groups may move to the starting point from the adjacent landing on the Pier or from the beach. Move under the pier from the landing to the start line
The final course layout and start wave information will be available at registration. It is your responsibility to confirm the course and your start wave. The start marshal will announce any variation to the race rules due to weather or safety issues
The Course
Please study the course maps. The open water courses are 1400m and 5km. Swimmers should initially swim between around the breakwater and marina in a clockwise direction and then swim between the sets of buoys between the marina and the sand spit
Swimmers in the 5km event will also swim 3 laps anti-clockwise around additional buoys before swimming around the end of the breakwater to the beach. See the map
After passing the marina and sand spit, swim directly to the beach and the finish line on the beach beside the Middle Brighton Baths
The Finish
The finish and timing gate will be located on the beach outside the yacht club and alongside the Middle Brighton Baths. Swimmers will be directed past the finish and beyond the beach area through the yacht club yard to avoid congestion. Please return your timing band to the marshals. Drinks, fruit and ice cream will be available inside the Yacht Club yard
Join the spectators on the concourse and pier to view the Klim Swim Relay and to attend the awards presentation after each event, and the draw of the raffle prizes including the trip for two to the Sheraton resort in Fiji.
Rinse-down Showers
Cold water rinse-down showers will be installed in the yacht club yard near the change area, so that swimmers can rinse off salt water after the swim
Safety
All swimmers in the 1400m and 5km open water events must confirm at registration that they are physically capable of completing the event safely and in reasonable time. Swimmers are reminded that conditions in an open water swim can be more difficult and water temperatures can be cooler than in a pool environment. It is recommended that you wear a wetsuit for extra warmth
Swimmers under 18 years must provide the consent of their parent or responsible adult when entering on-line or at registration on the day
Swimmers will receive a colour- coded swim cap to designate their swim division, which will allow lifesavers to identify swimmers unable to complete the course safely in an appropriate time Swim caps must be worn for the duration of the event
Members of the Brighton Lifesaving Club will be in attendance with powered water craft and surf skis at various points along the course. Swimmers requiring assistance should raise their arm to attract attention. Medical staff will be located in a tent adjacent to the finish area
Results
Results will be recorded using the timing band. Placings will be announced at the awards ceremony for each event
Official results and times for all entrants will be be available on the official website after the event.
Presentations of Trophies
Trophies will be presented at the conclusion of each event. All participants are encouraged to remain after the event to enjoy the live music and food
Weather and Water Conditions
The organizers reserve the right to modify the course layout or to postpone the event if the Water Safety Committee considers that the event can’t safely proceed as planned. In the event of postponement, an alternative date will be announced on the website and by an email to registered swimmers
